A dense and rich butter cake with a soft (but still dense) interior and a crunchy crust.
The Boterkoek is a Dutch pastry originating in the 1930s. It's main ingredient is butter which gives its characteristic rich buttery flavour. Appearing to be a "pastry for the people", the Boterkoek was not usually found in tea rooms, patisseries, or bakeries, but instead was a common pastry served at general stores as it's denseness was more popular among the hardworking folk such as fishermen, harbourworkers, and farmers. The pastry was commonly eaten with a strong coffee which would help cut the greasyness of the butter creating a delicious pairing.
